On Friday night, while playing board games, our friend, P, asked us if anyone wanted to go on a glider ride with him. Apparently, he had received a gift certificate for a free ride, but wasn't able to find anyone who was willing. Up in air in a bunch of metal and fiber glass and no engine... who wouldn't balk at the idea?

Well, I didn't!

So on Saturday morning, P picked up Chuk and me and we drove out to McMinnville, a city about an hour south west of Portland, Oregon. Along the way, we stopped for coffee and enjoyed some of the fall colors visible on the highway. The traffic was a little congested as we were cutting through Wine Country. Yeah, they have Wine Country in Oregon too. I enjoyed the drive because it was our first time going in this direction.

We arrived at Cascade Soaring, which was a small air tower next to a decommissioned landing strip. There were several gliders and a couple of propeller airplanes park on the grass nearby. We were greeted by a sturdy old man and his dog. He explained we could not take any cameras or cell phones up into the air, so I handed those over to Chuk who took some pictures. He weighed us to make sure we could ride in the glider together and we were just under the wire I believe. He led us to the glider and it was connected to an airplane with a very long tow rope.

When I first looked at the glider, there were only two seats, but there was just barely enough room for P and I to sit very close together in the back seat. The old man buckled us in one at a time making it clear not to touch anything at all except a bar that would be available once the canopy was brought down. The old man was to be our pilot so he got in and a lady whom I assume was his wife started up the airplane and began towing us.

Since the runway was being repaved, we took off from the ground. It wasn't especially bumpy and we were aloft more quickly than I expected. Except for us talking, the air blowing against the glider was the only noise as we climbed higher and higher in wide circles. The trees, house, cars became smaller and smaller. Soon we could see very far away. On the horizon was Mt. Saint Helens, Mt. Adams and Mr. Rainier. To the west were the hills but they were shrouded in mist.

When we reached 4,000 feet high, it was time for the pilot to make the glider let go of the tow rope. He warned us that it would sort of like getting to the top of a roller coaster ride, so we held onto the bar. The glider climbed up steeply and then pointed down quickly. The tow line was released and the airplane flew back to the airport while we enjoyed gliding around all the way back down.

Our pilot pointed out other things. The Willamette River is very narrow in this part of valley due to the large amount of nurseries. On the other side of the river was the town of St. Paul, which has a rodeo each 4th of July weekend. We could see really see the fall colors all over the place. The weather was partly cloudy and the sun came out only one to shine on us briefly during our flight.

Too soon, we found ourselves circling closer to the airport and finally coming in for a landing on the same grassy runway we had started from. It was one of the softest landings I ever experienced. After the pilot got out, he and his wife help extricate P and I from our seats.

After stretching our legs, the pilot's wife suggested we visit the air museum and see the Spruce Goose.

I enjoyed the opportunity to try something new, see the world from a different vantage point and meet some interesting people. If you enjoy riding in a airplane but hate craning your neck to look through that window outside, you will really enjoy a glider as the canopy is completely see-through. Be sure to do it with some one you don't mind being close to.

Friday after work, a co-worker gives me a ride home since I live on her way. But I won't be able to rely on her for rides home all the time as she is selling her house and will move somewhere else.

It has been hot in Portland the past few days so we got a couple of air conditioners, one for the upstairs, sold to me by a co-worker who now has central air and one downstairs found at the last minute on sale at Best Buy. They kept the place bearable.

For dinner, we walked over to Pho Ton and had various Vietnamese dishes. I liked my crispy egg roll and my shrip / calamari salad, but my mother's shrimp on bun was a little lackluster. Can't remember what Dad or Chuk had.

After watching some TV we went to bed.

Saturday, we did more yard work watering everything here and there and cleaning up more yard debris. Afterwards, we all went downtown to see the Chinese Classical Garden. If you visit Portland and have 2, 3 or 4 hours to spare, it is worth a visit. Lots of different areas with a wide variety of vegetation and interesting views, as well as as tea house were you can get a cuppa and some snacks.

We planned to have lunch at Alexis, but it was open for lunch only on weekdays, so our plan B was to visit the Saturday Market and have some food there. I had a pupusa (tortilla dough stuffed with pork, beans and cheese and cooked while you wait), which was very tasty. Chuk had what he says the best gyros he has tasted in Portland thus far. I forget what Dad had and Mom didn't have anything except for snow cone. Dad and Chuk also bought snow cones and I ate some of Chuk's snow cones. It was a really hot day.

After we returned home, I moved some things around in the bedroom, then took a nap for just about the rest of the afternoon, puttering around in the kitchen after I regain consciousness.

For dinner, Chuk, Dad and I went to Rheinlander for some German food. It was a very interesting experience as the servers are much more attentive than other restaurants and they sing! They sing along to an accordion player as he makes the rounds from room to room. The food was very tasty. All dinners come with a cheese fondue & bread pieces which you can upgrade by getting some sausages or a different type of fondue. We declined. I had the Jaeger Schniztel with Broccolli Cheddar soup. There was also spaetzle and green beans. Yum! Chuk also got the Jaeger Schnitzel with the same sides but a salad instead of a soup. It was a wedge of iceberg lettuce that had a few slices of radish on the side. Not sure how I feel about that. Should one be forced to use a knife on a salad? Dad got a different soup, the Bavarian Onion and the Wiener Schnitzel. It came with whipped potatoes and green beans. It was all very good.

After we got home, we watch a little TV then went to bed.

Today, Sunday, we did more yard work (keeping the kiwi away from the garage) after breakfast. Thankfully, it was overcast so it was slightly cooler.

Then we went to the Oregon Zoo and stayed until it started getting crowded, about noon. We picked up our friend <img src='http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif' alt='[info]' width='17' height='17' style='vertical-align: bottom; I was glad I was able to introduce my parents to her as she has been very hospitable while I was up here by myself, taking me to see cool things like the ballet and introducing me to her interesting friends over dinner, etc.

Then around 2:30 Chuk drove her back to her apartment which my parents and I stayed behind. I puttered around the kitchen some more, unpacking more boxes, reclaiming space for the dining room, etc. Actually, I was on a quest to find the knives and cutting board so we could enjoy one of the melons we got at the store a few days ago. After that, I decided it was time to enjoy the AC in the computer room and blog a little bit.

If past behavior is any predictor of future performance, we will probably go out for dinner some place quick and/or light then watch some TV and then go to bed.

Tomorrow, back to work (so soon already?!)

What's it say?">Las Vegas 2006

May 19, 2006

Getting There
Woke up at 3:15 for a 6:30 flight, but was able to sleep on the plane. After we disembarked, I changed into my short pants because it was very hot.

Brunch
We rented a car and drove to the Paris Casino where we had brunch in The Village Buffet, which is designed to appear you are eating al fresco even though it is nestled far inside the climate contolled environment. By 10, we were enjoying crepes, coffee and various other fare. This is one of our favorite places.

Liberace Museum
I was delighted and surprised with the Liberace Museum. There are a lot of really beautiful items, pianos, cars, costumes, furnishings but the buildings are rather utilitarian and part of a strip mall, which detracted from the fabulousness. The piece I liked the most was a desk upon which a famous treaty was signed.

Yarn Store
What is a trip without some retail therapy? We found a store that carries most of the types of yarn I need for the new afghan project. How I will squeeze 13 skeins into my carry-on will require some fancy thinking.

Orleans
Still undecided about this place. Its affordable and the service is great but the casino has the feel of a high school gynasium converted into a PTA Mardi Gras fund raiser. The room was on the 15th floor and had a nice view of the mountains to the west. After ouur adventures thus far we needed to rejuvente, so after a nice bath, I took a nap.

Dinner at Rio
We drove to the Rio via side streets and after picking up the tickets, we had dinner at the World Buffet. At first I thought we picked a bad place because there were few customers and the waitstaff were chilling in clusters, but the food was very good and became quite busy as we were leaving.

Show in the Sky
With the show's doors due to open in an hour, we killed time by wandering the casino and watching the indoor spectacle known as Show in the Sky. For most of the time, in the Masquerade casino room, a giant masked head watches over the crowd, but every hour on the half hour, there is a big dance number and even more floating contraptions bearing patrons and dancers circulate the ceiling in an orgy of light, music and motion. If a spectator is vocal enough, the dancers will throw beads to them, just like Carnival!

Penn & Teller
I was very glad we arrived soon after the doors opened because we got to listen to some live jazz while audience members walked onto the stage to sign a big manila envelope tacked to a board and inspect a wooden box. I also went onto the stage but the best part was turning around to walk back to my seat when I noticed someone famous playing the bass. I won't say much more about the show except that it was very entertaining and well worth the ticket price.

Fremont Street Experience
We arrived a few minutes too late to see the 11 o' clock showing, so we meandered under canopied Fremont Street walkway, looking at variou street performers and artists, finally giving up some money to Starbucks to get a cold drink and a place to sit. At midnight, all the neon and flashing lights of all the businesses on the three blocks went dark and a three block long projection TV display started off with huge eagles flying overhead and finished with almost mind altering splashes of color. It was very trippy.

When we returned to our room we fell asleep before our heads hit the pillow. So ended the first day of our Surprise Las Vegas Adventure.
Sadly, this was the only chapter I wrote...
